The other day I was casually browsing the internet and I ran across a website for downloading an Xbox 360 emulator. The site looked pretty shady, so I decided to head over to Google and find it on Wikipedia. It turns out that this is a standalone emulator that supports all console games, not just the Xbox 360. It also allows you to play games from your computer rather than your TV screen. The only problem is that the emulator is very new and not really well known. If you want to run it on your Windows or Linux computer, you need a highly-modified BIOS, as the one that comes with the Xbox does not work. "The final version of the emulator will have a downloadable BIOS available for download from a website on its official website," said Wei-Huan Chen at eXtreme Gamers.com. "Since there are no official Xbox 360 emulators for Linux, I'd say this is a big step towards true emulation of the console from both the hardware and software side." The emulator has been downloaded by over 300 users since its release last week. The emulator was designed to run on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well as Linux. In order to run the emulator you will need a special BIOS as the one that comes with your Xbox 360 is not compatible. The site is available at www.xbox360emulator.org/bios/. The new emulator has also taken off on Facebook, where thousands of users have downloaded it in just a few days. It is likely that the emulator will be available for Mac OS X once it has been tested more by gamers of all ages, although there are still some issues to fix before release. A Google search for the emulator yields a lot of results from sites with out-of-date information. There are very few YouTube videos showing gameplay with this new emulator, although it does work as advertised. One person who has tested the new console emulator is "Sylvanas" from youtube.com as she was able to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV on her PC. "It looks great, but I have played a couple of old games and they work fine," she said in an email to BBC News Online. On 6 January 2012 BBC News Online reported that BBC iPlayer would begin streaming Xbox Live content using the Xbox 360 Emulator software developed by eXtreme Gamers. This is a big step for the Xbox 360 as it allows the Xbox 360 to be played on a computer and then streamed to a television or other device. Shows such as Top Gear and The Apprentice, which is only available on the iPlayer, will soon be available via the emulator too. The Xbox 360 has been out of production since 2013. However, there are still games produced for the console such as Crackdown 2 (released in 2008) and Kinect Adventures (released in 2010).
